Picture Archiving & Communication System (PACS)
PACS is a storage and management system for diagnostic images. The term most commonly applies to the medical field, and includes images such as X-rays, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT). PACS have been utilized for more than 25 years, primarily within hospital and local community settings, affording in-hospital physicians and those practicing in a local community the ability to access electronically-stored patient diagnostic images.
MDIA has taken this important service to a new level, recognizing the importance of providing PACS over a broad national network to provide portability and availability of patients’ examinations through a central web-based archive on a 24/7 HIPAA-compliant access basis. What MDIA is providing for the Workers’ Compensation and subsequently for the Group Health patients is what is being offered by the Kaiser Foundation for its enrollees, as well as the Veteran’s Administration for its patients.
PACS Benefits:
- Broad geographic connectivity
- Rapid transfer of examinations from outlying areas to a central archive.
- Facilitates the ability for consultation with remote radiology and clinical practices
- Archived patient diagnostic examinations and reports are available through HIPAA-compliant access 24/7
